Oil-Immersed Transformer

An oil-immersed transformer is a type of electrical transformer in which the core and windings are immersed in insulating oil. This design is widely used in power transmission and distribution systems because it offers excellent cooling performance, reliable insulation, and long service life. The oil serves two important purposes: it acts as an insulating medium between energized parts, and it helps carry heat away from the internal components to the transformer tank and cooling surfaces. The basic structure of an oil-immersed transformer includes a magnetic core, high-voltage and low-voltage windings, an insulating oil-filled tank, bushings, and usually a conservator or expansion system. The core is commonly made from laminated silicon steel sheets to reduce eddy current losses and improve efficiency. The windings are typically made of copper or aluminum conductors and are carefully arranged to withstand electrical stress and mechanical forces. All active parts are submerged in transformer oil, which improves dielectric strength and protects the windings from moisture and oxidation. One of the main advantages of an oil-immersed transformer is its strong heat dissipation ability. During operation, electrical losses generate heat inside the transformer. The insulating oil absorbs this heat and transfers it to the tank walls or cooling devices, such as radiators. In natural cooling systems, the oil circulates by convection. In larger units, forced-air or forced-oil cooling may be used to enhance performance. This effective cooling allows the transformer to operate safely under heavy loads and high ambient temperatures.Another important benefit is high reliability. The oil not only provides insulation but also helps suppress partial discharge and arc formation. This makes the transformer suitable for demanding applications in substations, industrial plants, and utility networks. Oil-immersed transformers can be designed for different voltage levels and capacities, from small distribution units to large power transformers used in grid applications. However, proper maintenance is necessary to ensure long-term operation. The oil quality must be monitored regularly because contamination, aging, moisture, and overheating can reduce its insulating properties. Common maintenance tasks include oil testing, checking for leaks, inspecting bushings, and monitoring temperature and load conditions. If needed, the oil may be filtered, treated, or replaced to restore performance.Oil-immersed transformers are valued for their durability, efficiency, and ability to handle large power loads. Their robust construction and effective thermal management make them a fundamental part of modern electrical infrastructure. With correct installation and maintenance, they can provide stable and dependable service for many years.
